Our Working Whiskers program gives more cats the opportunity for safe and satisfying lives that match their preferences and experiences.
Equity for All Cats
Let’s agree all cats deserve an environment where they feel safe and satisfied — whatever that means to them. Hop on over to browse available pet cats, if you want a love bug or a trusty sidekick.
Sociability Spectrum
Think of Working Whiskers cats across a wide sociability spectrum. When evaluating cats in our care, we don’t draw a single line with pet cats on one side and Working Whiskers cats automatically on the other side.
It’s more complicated than that. Several variables in cats’ backgrounds and experiences so far in life determine their sociability preferences with people and their suitability for our Working Whiskers program.
- Some cats missed the crucial window for human socialization as kittens and feel stressed by the presence of people.
- Others like people well enough but only know freedom and find home life frustrating.
- Some grew up around horses and other barnyard friends and get all their social needs met from those connections more than human contact.
- Still others never really took to typical home-life rules and expectations and simply do better without that pressure.
In other words, some Working Whiskers cats may only show up at mealtime or may only eat after you go back inside, but others may follow you around during chores or even invite a little attention with a boop from time to time.
Potential Benefits of Adopting a Working Whiskers Cat
Working Whiskers cats offer several potential benefits to well-matched adopters willing to provide a safe and satisfying environment:
- Low-demand feline friend (who won’t wake you up by using your bed as a racetrack at 3 am)
- Lower allergen exposure for kitty lovers or family members with allergies
- Companionship for other animals on your property
- Rodent deterrence—mouser or not—since their presence in your barns or outbuildings often encourages mice and others to move along
