Surrender Your Pet

If you are no longer able to keep your pet for any reason, you can bring it to Foothills Animal Shelter. Here, you and your pet will be treated with compassion and respect throughout this process.

Unfortunately, we cannot accept wild animals. They should be taken to organizations who specialize in their care.

PROOF OF RESIDENCY

All patrons must provide identification verifying they are residents of Jefferson County when surrendering a pet as we are the open-admissions facility for this county.

How to Surrender Your Pet

SURRENDERING PETS – JEFFERSON COUNTY RESIDENTS

  1. Bring your pet to Foothills Animal Shelter along with proof of residency and the animal’s medical records during the hours of 9 am – 6 pm on weekdays and 9 am –6 pm on weekends. You can enter through our “Intake” door, just past our main doors.
  2. At the time of drop-off, you will sign a waiver releasing your ownership rights to the pet.
  3. You will be asked to give us as much information about your pet as possible. This information is very important, helping our staff know how to handle your pet safely, and providing any potential adopters with history about your pet’s behavior, special care, likes and dislikes. You can complete a questionnaire in person with the assistance of a staff member.
  4. Once you surrender your pet, it will undergo standard medical and behavior testing, and we will determine the best course of action – whether placement for adoption, transfer to a specialized rescue group, or euthanization due to poor health or temperament.
