Surrender Your Pet

Sometimes, pet owners find themselves unable to afford pet care, develop pet allergies, or must move to a home that does not allow animals. If you are no longer able to keep your pet for any reason, you can bring it to Foothills Animal Shelter. Here, you and your pet will be treated with compassion and respect throughout this process. Unfortunately, we can not accept wild animals. They should be taken to organizations who specialize in their care.

PROOF OF RESIDENCY

Please note: All patrons must provide identification verifying they are residents of Jefferson County when surrendering a pet. To best serve our immediate community of Jefferson County as well as increasing the chance of an owner finding their lost pet in the area it was lost, an out-of-county fee will be charged.

How to Surrender Your Pet

SURRENDERING PETS – JEFFERSON COUNTY RESIDENTS

  1. Bring your pet to Foothills Animal Shelter along with proof of residency and the animal’s medical records during the hours of 11 am – 5 pm on weekdays and 10 am – 5 pm on weekends. You can enter through our “Intake” door, just past our main doors.
  2. At the time of drop-off, you will sign a waiver releasing your ownership rights to the pet.
  3. You will be asked to give us as much information about your pet as possible. This information is very important, helping our staff know how to handle your pet safely, and providing any potential adopters with history about your pet’s behavior, special care, likes and dislikes. You can complete a questionnaire in person with the assistance of a staff member.
  4. Once you surrender your pet, it will undergo standard behavior testing, and we will determine the best course of action – whether placement for adoption, transfer to a specialized rescue group, or euthanization due to health or temperament.
