Our volunteers help us rescue, care for, reunite and adopt out thousands of animals every year. We could not achieve our mission of making lives better for pets and people without our volunteers!
Thank you for your interest in volunteering at Foothills Animal Shelter — we are excited to announce that we are now accepting new volunteer applications! We are only able to accept 30 new volunteers at this time, so please read through the following requirements to make sure Foothills is a good fit for you before you begin the process.
General Volunteer Requirements
- Must be 16 years of age or older
- Ability to fulfill a 6-month commitment with a regular weekly shift
- Watch an online orientation (13 minutes) and successfully complete a quiz
- Submit an online application (link to applications will be sent by email once orientation quiz is submitted)
- Pass a criminal background check (cost $17.75)
- Successfully complete the Fear Free Shelters series (4 hours) before May 12
- Attend “Animal Training Day,” complete a mentor session, and meet with the Volunteer department at the shelter on either May 29 or June 1 (Cats: 8:30 – 9:30 / Dogs: 9:45 – 11:30)
- Health Care roles require attendance at both cat and dog trainings
- Pay a volunteer fee to cover the cost of volunteer t-shirt and name tag (cost: $17 plus tax)
- Have regular access to an email account and internet connection for Shelter communications
Here are the roles we need help with at this time (additional shifts may become available):
- Dog Kennel Cleaning (Daily: 7:30 – 10 a.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays are highest need days)

Cat Kennel Cleaning (Daily: 8 – 10 a.m. Sundays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays are highest need days)

Retail Center (Daily: 10 – 1:30 p.m. / 1:30 – 5 p.m. Monday mornings and afternoons, Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings)

Feline Maintenance Extended Stay (Daily: 10 to noon, noon to 2 p.m., 2 to 4 p.m.)

Surgery Packs (Daily: shift time TBD)

Kennel Guide (Mondays and Tuesdays: 3-5 p.m.)
- Small Mammals and Animals Kennel Cleaning (Daily: 8 – 10 a.m. Tuesdays are highest need day)
- Dog Walking: Please know that the majority of our dogs are active, energetic, and large, so please be sure to read the Essential Capabilities document closely before applying for this role. Comfort with high-energy dogs is a must!
While other roles may become available over time, we do require a regular, weekly shift, so If you do not see at least 1 shift that fits your schedule above, or if you are not able to begin volunteering by mid-June, please come back and apply on June 11th for our summer on-boarding group!
